Husband just came home from here with 1 doz. x-large crabs, which we pre-ordered earlier in the day for a 4 p.m. pick up. When he got there, at 4:00 he ordered a pound of large shrimp, steamed as well. He waited for over 45 minutes which doesn't seem quite right. When he was handed the shrimp he questioned whether or not it was a pound as it was in a small Styrofoam takeout sandwich container. He was assured it was a pound. By the time he got home and opened the bag that the crabs were in, they were not even a bit warm. We only live 15 minutes away so we can only assume that the 45 minutes he waited were not spent steaming the crabs. When we looked at the x-large crabs we were a little surprised, they seemed kind of small. We measured a few and the largest one we could find was 6" -the rest were 5 to 5-1/2" which is not x-large in my book. We have a digital food scale and we put the shrimp, container and all, on the scale. It weighed 10.5 ozs. In addition if those shrimp were large, I would have hated to see their medium. He immediately called and spoke to Joanne who basically told him to count the shrimp which made no sense to me. If you order a pound of shrimp you are supposed to get a pound of shrimp -minus the weight of the container. She proceeded to tell him that you get a certain amount of shrimp in a pound. Does this mean they count your shrimp instead of weighing it?? When I go to the grocery store and ask for a pound of shrimp the clerk weighs it on a scale. I paid for a pound of shrimp, I want a pound of shrimp. She did offer to give us 6 ozs. of shrimp and a credit if we brought the crabs back. We declined as we did not want to make another trip. We just decided that we will go elsewhere from now on. The crabs were below so-so. One was hollow, none were really that meaty. We are not picky people, but when you pay good money for seafood, you would like to get what you pay for, that's all, no more no less. Very disappointed.

Delicious seafood! Place is not to be judged by appearance. Don't be deceived! A+++ Got the steamed clams and shrimp. The shrimp were to die for. :)

I'm shocked this place has 5-star reviews. The people there are nice, but the crabs were overcooked and some were close to not even legal size. My order for 2 bushels was ready when I arrived, but overall disappointing. Probably not going here again, too many $35 all-you-can-eat deals out there where the crabs are better.

Love the fresh seafood. It is close and cheap. Bob and Joann are wonderful and I love their specials. The decor is interesting and I always love coming here.

First crabs of the year -- XL males. Decent size, full and fresh considering that it's mid-April. Sign up for email updates and get discount pricing for your steamed crabs. I have bought their dinners in the past, but today we just wanted steamed jimmys. (Those are the males..,) Gotta run. Crabs are calling me.

The first time I went, It was fantastic. The captain is always friendly and the food is great. The second time I went (about a week later), Joanne (spelling?) must have been having a bad day. From the get go she seemed to have a little bit of an attitude. Decided to eat out on the picnic table and didn't think to grab water with my original $50 dollar order. Also, we needed some sort of knife to initially get the crab open. I had no problem with paying for these but she made it ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE, complaining that they lose 20 cents off the dollar for credit card purchases and the minimum is $5. Ok, I get it, but no need to be rude! Once we were done eating our hands were covered with delicious old bay seasoning, but you can't lick it ALL off! My date went inside and asked if there was a sink she could use. Joanne responded with a scoff and said something like "Are you fucking kidding me?!". She did not let my date wash her hands. My date was ready to run out of there and as we were getting in our vehicle, a kitchen prep came out and asked if she needed to wash her hands, that he had a sink available right on the side of the establishment. My date was so upset she said no, she just wanted out of there immediately! I explained to the kitchen prep why she was upset and he apologized. I know people have bad days from time to time, but this was absolutely unacceptable, but even more so when your motto is "Delawares friendliest crab house". We spent over $50 and were treated like absolute shit. We were a burden. Will not be going back as long as she is there, which is too bad, because I love the joint! Update: I give it two stars because the captain is great and the food is good. I don't suggest trying to eat there, take everything to go!

I had their crabs for the first time when I saw a facebook deal a couple months agol; 1 dozen med male crabs for $18 plus I added a dozen hush puppies to my order. When driving on rt.9 in Delaware City, you might drive right by this place. There is a restaurant called "Kathy's Crab House", next to Wiso's entrance, THAT IS NOT WISO'S. Their driveway is the 2nd one, beyond the ropes that seem to separate the properties. While driving down to their property they have all these touristy photo op type things in their driveway. Plenty of parking. I love Joanne, she is sweet and friendly. I've been ordering from them all summer. Their crabs are great. You don't even need butter the crabs are so good. I love their hush puppies too. The staff are always friendly and my orders have never been wrong. Good laid back people and great food.

It's the real deal. The Captain and Joanne do take-out crabs good. Get on their mailing list for the best prices and weekly seafood give-away drawings. Their crabs are done just right and you can order them spicy or regular with regards to their seasonings. They have good soups, steamed clams and shrimp. They also carry a selection of locally made artisanal hot sauces which have to be tasted if you are a pepper sauce fan (The 2011 - It's Hotter batch was really primo with citrus, garlic, and tons of smokey habanero and scotch bonnet fire). Call ahead and crabs are ready when you get there, but for the best crabs time your call so that they are coming out of the steamer when you walk in the door. The Captain and Joanne are also very nice folks in general - personable is a good descriptor. So even though their crabs are a half-hour away - one way, they are worth the drive and I recommend them highly... Just as a hint on their quality - noted hip hip artist DJ Jazzy Jeff is a customer.
